In this episode (Season 3, Episode 58), Joe Van Wie sits down with Tim Calpin, a gifted writer and entrepreneur whose story reads like a Hollywood script telling the tale of addiction, loss and finding a way back.

Tim's talent took him a long way. He graduated summa cum laude from Syracuse University with a B.A. in Communications before landing a job as assistant to the executive producer at Comedy Central's "South Park,". From there he built a successful career as a freelance writer and screenwriter, penning feature scripts for major studios including Warner Brothers, Paramount, Lionsgate, and YFG. His first feature film, "Assassination of a High School President," starred Bruce Willis, and he went on to develop television pilots for FOX and Comedy Central, among them the animated series "COPS: Uncuffed."

But alongside that success, Tim was living with a growing struggle with addiction. Over time, it pulled him away from the career and the life he'd built, eventually leading him to some of his lowest points, including time spent on the streets and in Kensington. In this conversation, he speaks candidly about how addiction can quietly take hold and reshape a person's entire path. He also discusses what it's like to come back from a place where so much has been lost and how he reinvented himself in an entirely different career.

What makes this episode resonate is Tim's perspective on that return. He and Joe explore themes of awareness, resilience, and the hard-won ability to accept life as it is rather than as it "should" be. It's a candid, thoughtful conversation about talent, struggle and the possibility of recovery. This is an honest look at how people lose their way and how they begin to find it again.
